SAWS in Pelagios

SAWS places and PelagiosPELAGIOS

Through the Pelagios project, we can see how the geographical places mentioned in SAWS texts also appear in other sources of information on the ancient world.

SAWS is one of many projects that are participants contributing to Pelagios. The breadth of projects involved in Pelagios allows rich information to be drawn about references to ancient places in various sources.

Pelagios means 'of the sea', the networking medium for ancient places

Using references from Pleiades, the gazetteer for ancient places, places that are mentioned in SAWS texts are annotated and published as Linked Data. Then we can see how these places appear in other sources of information on the ancient world.

The 'widget' below allows you to search for a particular place. It displays all the matches in the Pleiades gazetteer on a map and as a list. You can then view the Pelagios information associated with each of the places in these search results.

N.B. Thanks to Juliette Culver and colleagues in the Pelagios project for the widgets and for some of the text used above.
